An interesting little version of this book. Printed during WWII in a small and cheap format exclusively for members of the US Armed Forces. The paper is thin (and cheap!) so a bit fragile but it is a great collectable.
Armed Services Editions (ASEs) were small paperback books of fiction and nonfiction that were distributed in the American military during World War II.[1] From 1943 to 1947, some 122 million copies of more than 1,300 ASE titles were distributed to service members, with whom they were enormously popular. The ASEs were edited and printed by the Council on Books in Wartime (CBW), an American non-profit organization, in order to provide entertainment to soldiers serving overseas, while also educating them about political, historical, and military issues. The slogan of the CBW was: "Books are weapons in the war of ideas." - Wikipedia
This classic study of the Duke of Wellington, from the struggle against Napoleon to the post-war attempt to build a new Europe, was widely read by Britain's leaders in World War II. Guedalla's excellent account is particularly noted for his coverage of the large number of quips and witticisms made by Wellington during his campaigns.
This is the Armed Services Edition.
