This book tells the story of the modern warship, from the first armoured ships of the iron and steam period to the sophisticated nuclear-powered submarines of the 1960s. Coverage is international; the main developments in armament, protection and machinery and the changes in function which affected design are traced through capital ships, carriers, cruisers, torpedo boats and destroyers, submarines, and sloops and gunboats. The book ends with a section on miscellaneous vessels which describes a few of the 'originals' in warship design.
