The Crimean War falls neatly in between the battle of Waterloo and 1914 and was, in a sense, the last of the old and the first of the new. There are separate chapters on the British, French, Russian, Turkish and Sardinian forces as well as a fascinating account of the terrible winter of 1854 and the effect it had on the clothing worn by the troops. This was also the first war when, rather stiltedly, photography was used.
