Storry, director of the Far East Centre of St. Anthony's College, Oxford, seeks to trace the origin and development of the Japanese warrior class, its codes and ideals, and its eventual decline from the 11th century to the coming of Matthew Perry's "Black Ships" in the mid-1800's.
