It’s hard for people now to imagine the atmosphere of those days. All Europe was dominated by Nazi Germany, and the Japanese were getting nearer and nearer to the poorly-defended coastline of Australia.
All members of the RAAF, including the 28,000 WAAAF, were volunteers.
The WAAAF Book shows the sex discrimination of the times in rates of pay and allowances and in the hostility of some male officers to women holding status. It also shows the wonderful sense of freedom and achievement, and the comradeship that the WAAAF’s experienced.
From the contributions, from all over Australia, the editors have made a representative selection that gives an overall picture of the service and its significant impression on the lives of the women who participated.
