The Spanish poet, Lope de Vega, described the extraordinary spectacle of the Great Armada as it set out from Spain in the summer of 1588 as 'a jungle upon the sea'. Another observer spoke of 'the ocean groaning under the weight of ships' as they appeared on the horizon at dawn off the Lizard. It is not surprising that England's escape from engulfment by this stately monster became a legend for all time.
Mary Connatty's retelling of the story is both exciting and very human. She gives us insights into the motives of the leaders and the scale of the vast enterprise. She makes us see the ships as they battle it out down the English Channel. She brings alive the long-dead sailors and soldiers. She tells how the English, helped by 'the winds of God', defeated the Armada and how Elizabeth I sang her own praises while her sailors lay abandoned in her ports and thousands of Spaniards sank into watery graves.
