Throughout European history there have been crusades, mercenary troops, 'grand armies' and international brigades. But there has never been anything like the French Foreign Legion.
In the century and a half since its formation, the Legion has become a legend, admired by some as the modern version of one of the ancient orders of chivalry, deplored by others as a rag-bag collection of villains, ne'er-do-wells and thugs. Probably only an ex-legionnaire like the author of this book can give a true picture of such a unique corps.
