The main brunt of the assault fell upon 3 RAR [3rd Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment] and 2 PPCLI [2nd Battalion, The Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry], the former suffering 32 dead and 59 wounded, the latter 10 dead and 23 wounded. Between them, and with the aid of the New Zealand gunners [16th Field Regiment, Royal New Zealand Artillery] and an American tank company [Company A, 72nd Tank Battalion], they fought an entire enemy division to a standstill.
