Eighteenth-century military history is attracting an increasingly wide and well-informed public. A great deal is known about the monstrous Frederick of Prussia, the foremost soldier of his time. So far we have heard very little about the military achievement of hist great and gracious rival, the Empress-Queen Maria Theresa of Australia, who deserves to go down in history as 'the lady who gave Old Fritz a bloody nose'.
The Army of Maria Theresa does full credit to the human interest of this colourful period. The book is based largely on contemporary memoirs and manuals, and the wealth of unpublished manuscript material in the Kriegsarchiv, Vienna.
