These rules cover the years in which an Art of War emerged from the chaos of the Medieval world. By the end of the period the elements of warfare for the next 150 years were developed. No country in Europe escaped the effects of the Renaissance, great social and religious changes brought about a series of wars which swept across the Continent. In the sixteenth century the Medieval Knight, the spearman and the bow man were replaced by the Reiter, the pikeman and the arquebusier. The seventeenth century saw firearms undergo a series of improvements from arquebus to musket and to firelock musket. At the start of this period artillery was slow and cumbersome, fit only for sieges; by the end of it, guns were in moderately efficient use in all armies. These rules are written to provide a competition standard set of rules, suitable for a National Convention, and it is hoped that players will not find too many loop-holes. To the wargamer new to this period: do not be daunted by the apparent complexity of these rules, provided you do not at first fight battles with enormous armies, the systems used are very easy to learn...
