The Hawker Hurricane was the RAF's first monoplane fighter. Hurricanes outnumbered Spitfires during the Battle of Britain by three to one, and downed more aircraft. However, the Spitfire's higher performance and smaller silhouette meant that it was more than twice as likely to survive contact with the enemy.
