Both the Queen Mary and her sister ship, Queen Elizabeth, served throughout WWII as troop transports. They wore battleship grey, carrying up to 16,000 military personnel at once. Travelling unescorted at 32+ knots, they were a hard target for U-boats; both survived the war.
