Armoured tacticians soon realised that tank units fighting alone soon became vulnaerable to counter attack and to infantry anti-tank weapons, as well as being unable to occupy captured territory. A specialised force of mobile infantry was required, the foremost exponents of this during the Second World War were the Panzer Grenadiers, troops that became an integral part of the Panzer Divisions and regiments.
