Gettysburg, 1 July 1863. Union: The Army of the Potomac - James Arnold & Roberta Wiener - Osprey Order of Battle 2

Regular price $23.95

On the evening of 30 June west of Gettysburg troopers of General John Buford's 1st Federal Cavalry Division prepared for a fight. Scouts had spotted Confederate infantry nine miles away and they were expected the following morning. One of Buford's officers remarked that they would easily beat them off if they came back.

On 1 July two Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia punched towards Gettysburg. Buford's men fought desperately for the time their comrades needed to reach them. These were the first shots of the battle that would turn the tide of war and decide the fate of the Union.

The Order of Battle Series presents the military enthusiast with a new angle on the major battles of history. Supported by comprehensive organisation diagrams the forces involved are examined unit-by-unit, including the 'tooth' combat elements and the vital 'tail' support troops. The objectives of the operation are analysed and this 'theory' contrasted with the realities of the battle itself. Order of Battle blows away the fog of war and provides the most detailed information ever published on the great clashed of history and the units which fought them.
