In the First World War Germany possessed a fine, modern Fleet. The ships were well designed, strongly constructed and in every sense fine fighting ships. In this book can be traced the rise of the Imperial German Navy from its origin, growth during the "Naval Race" with Great Britain, its use in battle and final dissolution under the Peace Treaty, which left Germany with a handful of obsolete warships suitable only for coastal defence. Seldom, if ever before has such a well balanced Fleet enjoyed such a brief moment of glory. The rapid growth of the submarine service and the priority given to its construction in the latter part of the war provides an interesting and frightening parallel with the similar situation in World War II. Continuing the Ian Allan series of books dealing with warships, the usual details of individual ships are given, thus providing a reference book to all those German fighting ships which participated in World War I.
