We, in Australia, regard the landing of the Australian, New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli as a great national event - "The Birth of a Nation", and there is no doubt that is was, and we tend to focus our attention on that shrapnel-swept beach and the heroes that wrote the name "Anzac" large in our history. Over eighty years later, we look back gathering facts, from long-forgotten books and documents to assist our understanding of how the Dardanelles Campaign came about and in doing so we should not ignore the effect two German warships, the battlecruiser SMS Goeben and the light cruiser SMS Breslau, had on the origins of this unfortunate episode of World War I.
