The replica of the World War 2 pocket chess set was inspired by the chess sets GI's carried with them during the war. The USO, Red Cross and many churches and charitable organizations made pocket chess sets to send overseas to soldiers and sailors. Some included checkers and tic-tac-toe. They were flat which made them easy to mail. The compact size also travelled well with the troops, who stuffed them packs and duffles while on the move. This small gesture of entertainment was much appreciated as a distraction from the harsh conditions the troops faced during the war. Even today, churches use pocket chess sets in their aid packages distributed by missions throughout the world.
