On 23rd July 1745, Prince Charles Edward arrived in Scotland with nine companions, few arms and little money. The news aroused both dismay and enthusiasm amongst his supporters, but, in the last battles to be fought on British soil, they twice defeated the numerically superior and better disciplined government armies before the Duke of Cumberland exacted a terrible revenge at Culloden.
