The Army of Frederick the Great is one of the best known of the period. At the beginning of the war the army was in fact composed largely of foreigners. Only after the heavy losses of the first two years was the army composed mainly of Prussians.
In 1756, the army had thirteen regiments of cuirassiers, twelve of dragoons, eight of hussars, forty eight of infantry, one of pioneers, twelve of garrison troops and thirty battalions of grenadiers.
During the course of the war, a large number of free corps were raised to offset the lack of effective light infantry. There were also several other new units raised, which will be described in the text.
