The 1st edition of these rules appeared in 1969, were immediately adopted for the Ancient games in the British National Wargames Championships of that year and, despite competition from a number of would-be rival sets often partially plagiarised from them, succeeding editions have been used in every important wargames convention since and continue to be used by an overwhelming majority of ancient wargamers.
Sixth edition Ancients was published in August 1980 and was a major revision and simplification of the previous sets, which had gradually increased in complexity over the years. It proved so popular that it continued in use long after its replacement by seventh edition and other later sets.
This edition enlarges the time span of the rules to cover the high medieval period. It now finishes at the end of the Wars of the Roses and before the great Italian Wars in which gunpowder at last came into its own.
